“Two days before she died. Must have been a really long talk.” Connor raised an eyebrow and played the last message. It was from Attorney Andrews himself. He sounded tense and furious.

“How the hell did you get yourself into this mess? The moment you receive this message, you better leave town as soon as you can. I’ll have things sorted out while you’re gone. The captain and I are close so don’t worry. And never break down crying in front of me again. Understand?!” he slammed the handset down on the phone but he seemed to have missed the receiver as the message continued. “Who was that?” a voice in the background spoke up. Connor and I looked at each other and leaned in closer, listening with intent. “My son. He’s gotten a girl pregnant and it didn’t end too well when she told him. I never imagined that Eric could be so violent.” The timer for the message had run out and was cut off.

“Damn it!” I snapped at the phone but Connor put a hand on me.

“It’s okay. We’ve got what we need. This message was on the day of the death. The day we discovered her body.” He looked at me with a smile forming on his face.

“But is it enough? We’re talking about a really powerful person here.”

Connor frowned and realized that I might be right. He stood up from the bedside and looked at it for a moment.

“Is this where…” his voice trailed off but I knew what he was going to ask.

“Yes. He even tied me down to restrain me.” My voice was weak and silent. In the corner of my eye, I could have sworn that the door on my right was creaking open but I shrugged it off. Connor walked towards the other room and towards a filthy hamper filled with Eric’s used clothes. The pile was so high that it could have been weeks since he last did the laundry…that’s it!

“Search that!” I pointed at the pile of clothes and we dug through the heap, searching for any piece of bloody clothing.
